New England Regional Wine Show

Thu 01st Nov 2012

A successful  8th New England Regional Wine Show  was held during October this year.  Details on the Show, its Judges and awards are available on the New England Wine Show website at  Details of awards and trophies at the Show are also available at the "Awards" tab above.  This year the Show broke the previous record of percentage of entries winning awards, which is also well above the national averegae for wine shows, and is testament to the regional industry's emphasis on continual quality improvement.  Congratulations go to all entrants and award winners, to the Glen Innes Show Society for their organisation and dedication, and to the judges who provided top notch judging and feedback for producers.  This year we were lucky enough to have Rob Geddes as Chair of Judges, as well as Charles Whish and Stephen Doyle as main judges, who were rounded out by Associates Bligh Grant from UNE and Ella Robinson from the Australian Wine Research Institute. Congratulations and thanks also go to Peter Malcolm and his team who put on an impressive degustation dinner at the Awards night, matching local gourmet dishes with a range of award-winning local wines.

The Show is held in October at Glen Innes each year and operates as a subcommittee of the Glen Innes Show Society under very professional and expert guidance driven by some very dedicated Glen Innes Show Society committee members, local wine representatives and voluntary stewards, judges and associate judges.

The New England Regional Wine Show accepts entries of finished and unfinished, micro and museum class wines from the New England Australia GI Region and adjoining Regions. The Friday of the show is usually dedicated to education and wine industry development activities,  with a masterclass of specific wine varieties, several workshop sessions, followed by an exhibitor tasting where the wine producers rub shoulders with the judges to learn more about continual quality improvement and producing product for trends in tastes and preferences. This is then followed by the annual wine show  awards dinner. Entries close in late September each year.

This is the most popular competition for the region's wines and benchmarks the locals against neigbouring regions' wines, whilst being scrutinised by a panel of nationally-renowned wine judges.  In recent years the Show has been lucky enough to have had Chairs of Judges of the calibre of James Halliday, Huon Hooke, and in 2012  Rob Geddes.  Other  judges attending the Show whom we are pleased to welcome back year after year and whose input is invaluable to the regional producers include Charles Whish, Mike DeGaris and Stephen Doyle.  These fantastic contributors to the region's wines are rounded out by associate judges each year.  The New England Regional Wine Show is one of only 21 accredited "feeder" wine shows for the Australian National Wine Show held in Canberra each year.

In summary the New England Wine Show is a highly regarded show now being one of only 21 accredited feeder shows for the National Wine Show; it attracts a highly regarded judging panel each year who always say they enjoy the country hospitality of the region (as well as the wines of course!), and it is also used as a platform to help the local wine industry through the provision of masterclasses, seminars and expert speakers.
