2013 New England Wine Show a Great Success for the Region's Wines!

Sat 19th Oct 2013

Nine gold medals were awarded at the recent  9th annual New England Wine Show held on 17-19 October 2013 at Glen Innes which highlighted the excellent quality of the wines from the New England Australia and surrounding wine regions.

There were 110 entries from 19 wineries from the New England, Northwest, Hastings, Mid North Coast and Granite Belt regions.

The judging panel comprised  Mike de Garis, Steve Doyle (Bloodwood Wines), Charles Whish (Serafino Wines) and Associate Judge, Michael Coode of the Australian Wine Research Institute SA.

The local Toppers Mountain 2013 Gerwurztraminer was the stand-out wine of show, winning a Gold and a host of trophies including the NSW Trade & Investment Best New England Australia GI Wine of Show.  Other trophies won by that wine include  The Hereford Steakhouse Award for Best Aromatic White Wine of Show, the 2013 Judging Panel Shield for Chief Stewards Award and the joint winner for The Whish Family Shield for Best Wine of the Show (shared with the Granite Belt's Lucas Estate 2012 Shiraz).  Toppers Mountain was also awarded the trophy for Champion Winery of Show.

Other New England wineries which secured awards and trophies include: Deetswood Wines and Kurrajong Downs  from Tenterfield, Merilba Estate Wines from Kingstown, Splitters Swamp Vineyard from Bolivia, Thomas New England Estate Wines from Delungra, and Wright Robertson Wines from Glencoe.  A full breakdown of the awards by New England wineries is listed on the Awards page of this website. Cassegrain Wines from the Hastings also won a swag of awards from wines made with New England fruit and the New England is proud to list them as part of the family!

The other winners from surrounding regions which did very well include:  Bago Vineyards from Wauchope, Bird Dog Wines and Mt Tamborine Vineyard  from Mt Tamborine, Lucas Estate and Moonrise Estate from Stanthorpe and Symphony Hill Wines from Ballandean´╗┐. Special mention should be made of a new entrant this year -  Old Inn Vineyard from Bulahdelah -  who won a Gold for their 2013 Verdelho - the first time they have ever entered a wine in a wine show!

Congratulations to all the entrants in the Show this year.  The judges again mentioned they are surprised by how well the region's wines are improving and how the producers continually benchmark for quality and strive for, and reach,  excellence!
